Maritime piracy is a widespread international concern. Over the years, it has been on the rise, with the number of attacks increasing substantially. Reported attacks against commercial ships have tripled over the past decade. The risk of attack is increasing with 90 percent of the world's trade moving via ship and 45 percent of all shipping moving through the pirate-infested waters of Asia. Clearly, piracy is becoming an increasing threat to global trade.
